This is the character you will play. Choose carefully whether you want to play a female or male character. There is no difference in terms of gameplay.
Changing your gender later will cost money so don't mess it up at the start.
Keep playing through the tutorial, following the main quest line, to reach the point where you can customize your character's appearance.
The starting region is called Asperia. Keep playing the main story quest line in Asperia.
At some point the game will rush you ahead, skipping the original story, into a new region named Vera after a cutscene showing a summary of events that happened in the main story.
Continue the Vera main quest until you complete 25% and end up in your apartment in the city Mirroria. This will unlock a lot of game content.
At this point you can go back to Asperia to complete the main story quest that was skipped and exploration in that region.
Do not spend Dark Crystals, they are a premium currency that can be used for gacha pulls.
Keep your world level low so that you can play comfortably, don't raise it too quickly.
Do not pull on limited banners until you have enough pulls saved up to get 120 Flame Gold.
Join an active crew (guild). Look at the crew leaderboards and try to join one of the top crews.
You're new so it's going to take 6 months or so to catch up to veteran players - similar to most MMOs. You need patience and to set your expectations accordingly.
You need to be social. Most players are high level and don't run low level content. Ask people in world chat to join you for multiplayer content.
If you want to play meta dps or maximize your damage:
Pick one element to main: Flame, Frost, Physical, Volt. They are all viable so pick whatever you like.
Do not pull rerun weapons, only pull for new weapons of your chosen element or new Altered weapons.
Farm gear with good substats for your chosen element.
